Colored Water – A Sign of Plumbing Problems

Your home’s plumbing system is no stranger to breakdowns and issues over time. Water can cause parts to wear out, which can cause leaks, bursts, and a number of other issues. However, one issue that serves as a good early indicator of other serious problems is the color of your water. If you find that your water is coming out of the tap and has a strange hue to it, you may wish to have a plumber come out as soon as possible because these could be a crucial early-warning sign of a potentially major problem.

RED/BROWN WATER

If your water is coming out of the tap in a red or brown-like color that reminds you of rust, then that’s exactly what’s probably causing it: rust. Do you live in an older house? Odds are if your home hasn’t been re-piped then you probably have old iron pipes still in your walls. Over time, iron tends to rust and erode, particularly in water. That rust can then bleed into your water supply, giving it the odd color.

If you see this, contact a skilled Tarrant County plumber as soon as possible because this is usually the first indicator of an imminent pipe failure, which can cause significantly more damage to your home.

YELLOW WATER

Yellow water is an indicator of high manganese concentration. There are a number of reasons that this can happen, and some of them don’t even involve your home’s system, as it can occur in any one of numerous spots up the line from your home to the distribution center. The manganese won’t hurt you unless you have an allergy to it, but it’s still a good idea to get an inspection from a plumber, just in case you can get the issue resolved in your own home.

BLUE/GREEN WATER

Much like the red/brown water we discussed earlier, blue/green water also has to do with rust, this time from copper pipes. Copper doesn’t usually rust with water, but it’s not invincible and the blue/green hue is caused by this type of rust bleeding into your water. This is far more rare than with iron pipes, and can potentially cause serious health problems if you ingest it into your system. And also like iron pipes, this is usually a sign of imminent pipe failure, so it is strongly advised you call for emergency repairs as soon as possible.
